The Change Guard in London, officially known as Guard Mounting, is a ceremonial event that occurs at Buckingham Palace. Watching it is certainly one of the most famous things to do in London!
On the London Change of the Guard tour, you will discover the best way to experience the changing of the guard in London in a funny way, which, let us tell you, is not waiting for hours at the gates of Buckingham Palace!
Experience the change between the Old Guard and the New Guard from the beginning, at Friary Court, the back of St James Palace. March alongside the band with your excellent tour guide while you get to learn all the history behind this ancient ceremony.
On the tour, you will also get to see the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace, arguably the most famous spot to see the changing of the guards (but is it the best?).
The event is free to watch and usually lasts around 45 minutes. During the tour, you will see the soldiers of the Queen's Guard march into the Palace courtyard and exchange the Old Guard for the New Guard. The soldiers are dressed in traditional red uniforms during summer and grey in winter, along with bearskin hats.
Please, note that although the Change Guard is scheduled every day in June and July, and every 2 days the rest of the months, the British Army can cancel the event. In this case, they would not notify until 10:30 on the day of the event, so the walking tour will run ahead regardless.

Matt was a fun, knowledgable tour guide! We liked the idea of following the guards, rather than staying in one place - and it was a fun way to do this London event! Even though there were a TON of people around on the day of our tour, due to the Queen's Jubilee, Matt was able to navigate around the crowds and show us neat stuff! We would recommend it!
Learned a ton and had an amazing time! We enjoyed learning about the history of the royal family and some facts about the current royal fam from a true Brit. Matt was great and so helpful!
Excellent Tour conducted by Matt. It was informative with amusing anecdotes and Matt was good fun and very knowledgeable. Because of the barriers still up for the Jubilee celebrations there were more people in the accessible areas than usual, however Matt explained all of this and went above and beyond by extending the tour slightly and taking us to a good viewing area so that we could see the guards and band marching.
